The Ball In Hand group show their commitment to professional pool and 9 ball with the opening of this rather classy establishment!
A short walk from Asoke Skytrain this cavernous hall is situated in the basement of The Times Square building, which provides ample free parking! (Take your ticket for validation.)
Very much the big dogs on the block The Ball In Hand caters exclusively to players, if you are familiar with their Nana hall this will come as no surprise.
From the very moment of entry you land on Planet 9 ball, the hardwood floor sweeps you in past the Pro shop into a beautifully presented array of tables.
The equipment here is unrivalled; eight brand new nine-foot Brunswick Metro tables decked in pro cloth as used in all the big tournaments, and one lonely eight-foot Brunswick separated from its larger brethren by a chic circular bar.
House cues are fine CueTec’s with Pro layered tips, the Pro shop here carries a wide selection of cues, which range from 4000 to 40,000 Bhat and also provides a full repair service!
Games cost 25B each or 240B per hour, certified Pro instruction is on offer at 1000B for one and a half hours.
Tournaments are held every Saturday with a Handicap system in place to suit all skill levels; this is both thoughtful and essential given the very high standards exhibited by some players. You will not find The Ball In Hand taking part in the Sukhumvit 9 ball league as they are considered to have to many skilled players!
The ambience of this hall encourages concentration and distractions are kept to a minimum, you will not find hostesses here but friendly attendants who are ever ready to rack up and hand you a rest for those tricky shots. Instead of the usual large screen sports coverage, several plasma screen TV’s are set into the walls at regular intervals and above the well stocked bar. Music here is a very eclectic mix to suit all tastes, and is played at perfect levels for concentration and interaction. Seating is minimal, but comfy and more than adequate for the needs of the patrons. Preconceptions of smoky, dingy pool halls are banished by this well light and amply air-conditioned refuge.
This branch attracts the usual Expats/Tourists, but also far more Thai players than the Nana hall and families with older children. I think this due in no small part to its classier location…
All things considered The Ball In Hand – Asoke is the brightest star in Bangkok’s Pool constellation, surpassing its sister hall not by size but by location and sheer flair!
